the shooting the suspect james holmes mailed a package to the university of colorado anschutz medical campus where he had been a student. the package had been sent to a psychiatrist who was also holmes' professor but that package wasn't discovered until monday, three days after the shooting. this story is just breaking tonight and our senior correspondent john miller has details. john, what do we know? >> reporter: scott, this was not unexpected. as we reported, u.s. postal inspectors have been searching through the mailboxes near the suspect's home looking for letters or packages james holmes might have sent out. they didn't find any, but now we know that's because the package had already been sent even before the shooting. on monday afternoon, investigators scoured the mail room at the university of colorado and found what they've been searching for-- a piece of mail from the alleged shooter, james holmes. but before opening it, the sheriff's bomb squad handled it with a robot and took an x-ray just in case there were explosives inside. sources say the letter was from a pent-up holmes to o

development in the mass shooting at a colorado theater. the suspect james holmes was seeing a doctor who specializes in schizophrenia. drew griffin is with cnn's special investigations unit. >> according to his attorney in colorado the 24-year-old accused of killing 12 and gunning down dozens of others was seeing a psychiatrist at the time of the shooting. it's a huge development that stems from that package that was mailed to a professor at the university of colorado's aurora campus on monday. according to a motion filed in colorado, just yesterday, that professor was actually james holmes' psychiatrist, dr. lynn fenton the head of student medical health services at the university of colorado's aurora campus and according to holmes' attorney mr. holmes was a psychiatric patient of dr. fenton and his communications with her are protected. that attorney is now trying to get ahold of that package and the contents of which according to cbs news supposedly describe how holmes would kill people. the information is privileged according to holmes' attorney, confidential, and should not be in th

gunman now identified as 24-year-old james eagan holmes. he was arrested outside the theater near the back of a apartment. outside police found three weapons in that car, another gun was found inside the theater. authorities evacuated everyone in the suspect's apartment building by 4:00 a.m. after he warned them that his home was booby trapped. when they broke in later they found incendiary and chemical devices as well as apparent trip wires. police are still on the scene at that apartment. let's get the very latest right now starting with cnn's ed lavandera. he's over at the movie theater where all of this unfolded. what is the very latest, ed? >> reporter: wolf, we've just confirmed with a law enforcement source as to where these four guns were purchased. we've been told by this law enforcement source that all four guns were purchased legally within the last six months. two of the guns were purchased at a bass pro shop in the city of denver. one of the guns was purchased at a mountain gander gun store here in the town of aurora. another was purchased at a gander mountain in thor

, good evening. tonight, we are learning that before james holmes allegedly carried out his attack and before he ended up in the jail behind me, he may have mailed out a road map to the massacre. tonight, abc news has learned a notebook believed to be written by the suspect, james holmes, was mailed to the university of colorado, where holmes had been a student, until dropping out last month. fox news is reporting the notebook was mailed to a psychiatrist at the university and that it contains, quote, full details about how he was going to kill people. drawings of what he was going to do in it. drawings and illustrations of the massacre. there are conflicting reports on whether the notebook arrived at the university before or after the massacre. but it apparently wasn't found until monday, during a search of the mail room. this, of course, raises questions about whether if the package had been found before last thursday, the carnage could have been avoided. the university will not confirm the existence of the notebook, but released a statement, saying it delivers the mail the same

year-old james holmes into custody soon after the midnight massacre but the motive is still not known. holmes was a graduate student at the university of colorado but reportedly dropped out last month. the new batman movie was well underway at the century 16 complex in the denver suburb of aurora when the deadly chaos broke out towards the front of theater 8. cell phone video captured some of the frantic moments after the massacre. witnesses say the gunman was wearing a gas mask and detonated two canisters of some type of gas before opening fire on the unsuspecting audience. police say holmes was armed with a rifle and pistol when they arrested him without incident behind the theater. his apparent vehicle was searched. holmes told police that he had explosives at this apartment near the theater so the fbi joined police in searching the complex. and now there's word from the aurora police chief that the suspect's apartment may be booby trapped. the area has been evacuated. back at the theater, people are still trying to piece together what happened. because the shooting happened duri
